Binghamton, New York – Citizen Action of New York is thrilled that, in a major victory for tenants, the Binghamton City Council has officially passed Good Cause Eviction protections, ensuring that renters have the right to stay in their homes as long as they pay rent and follow their lease.
This milestone follows years of advocacy by tenants, housing justice organizations, and community leaders who have fought for stronger protections against unjust evictions and predatory rent hikes, and we applaud Councilmember Nate Hotchkiss for bringing the legislation to the council!
“Every Binghamton renter deserves a safe, stable home, free from the fear of unjust evictions and rent hikes,” said Salka Valerio, Lead Organizer at Citizen Action of New York. “With Good Cause Eviction protections in place, our city is standing up to slumlords who have taken advantage of renters for far too long. This is a huge step toward ensuring that all tenants—especially those most vulnerable—can stay in their homes without fear.”
Good Cause protections, which were passed statewide in April 2024, prevent landlords from evicting tenants without a valid reason and allow renters to challenge steep rent hikes. By adopting these protections locally, Binghamton has taken a crucial step in protecting housing security and tenant rights.
Citizen Action of New York has supported communities across the state in opting into these protections, recognizing that stable housing is essential for strong communities.
