Ian’s Law: Real Health Insurance Reform

Ian’s Law: Real Health Insurance Reform

Ian Pearl needs extremely expensive medical care, including 24-hour in-home nursing. Two years ago, Guardian Life Insurance Company wanted to cancel Ian’s coverage. But, because of a New York State law preventing insurance companies from cancelling policies due only to high costs to the company, they weren’t able to.

Instead, Guardian decided to cancel the entire line of coverage that Ian had, which would have left him, and about 500 other with no insurance. Ian, whose medical costs are over $1 million a year, obviously would not have been able to sustain his care.

Today, the state legislature will address the Governor’s proposed mid-year budget cuts, which include $686 million to education and millions more to after-school programs and Medicaid. He has also proposed a state spending cap that will devastate schools, hospitals, and other institutions that rely on state funding.

Simultaneously representatives from Citizen Action and Health Care for America Now were meeting with the Congressman in Washington making clear to him how much his district stands to gain from passage of the House bill.

Trick or Treat?

Trick or Treat?

This Halloween it isn’t vampires, werewolves or zombies that we should be afraid of.

Scaring folks around the country this year is the possibility of not winning real health care reform. As both the House and Senate prepare to vote on their health care bills, many Members of Congress remain undecided or against real reform.

I Had No Choice?

I Had No Choice?

by Bob Cohen, Policy Director
On October 15th, Governor Paterson initiated what has unfortunately become almost a new ritual in Albany – telling us that he has to make further “mid-year” cuts to the existing severe state budget. The details are mind-numbing – $686 million in aid cuts to school districts (on top of the freeze in education spending earlier in the year), and cuts to after-school and Medicaid – but the consequences are clearer: less remedial programs, bigger classes, and parents scrambling to find alternative child care arrangements.
