I’m starting to think that I’m in the movie, Groundhogs day. Why you ask? Well, another unarmed person of color was shot and killed by the police. This time in Tulsa Oklahoma. Just as we were digesting that news, North Carolina police shot a disabled man who was waiting for his child to finish school. Yeah, it’s been a rough week. Protest have already begun to erupt all over the country, and the anger and frustration is palpable. A lot of us feel helpless, and emotions are running high. In times like this, its important for us to look for ways to be allies in the movement. Sometimes that means marching, but something as simple as listening or showing empathy can be just as impactful. No matter what you do, your words and your actions are powerful. Don’t give up, we’re making a difference. Now let’s take a break from the negative, and celebrate the accomplishments from this week.

Phone Banking for Sara Niccoli. On September 17 volunteers from the Capital District and Hudson Valley threw their support behind State Senate Candidate, Sara Niccoli. Participants spoke to potential voters on the phone, sharing their stories and urging people to elect Niccoli into office. We should give major props to these volunteers who have given their time to help elect another progressive candidate into office.
It’s Time to Reclaim our Schools. On Wednesday, September 21, our Hudson Valley chapter teamed up with the Race Unity Circle of Poughkeepsie and the Alliance for Quality Education to host a community forum. At the event, community members learned, how public education funding cuts and the school-to-prison pipeline are hurting our community. You can check out all of the photos from the event by clicking here.
Supporting our Sisters and Brothers of the UAW. On Wednesday, the Capital District chapter joined their sisters and brothers of the United Auto Workers 1508 in Green Island, at the Leo W. O’Brien Federal Building in Albany. These brave workers have been locked out of their jobs by Honeywell for over 130 days. Instead of engaging in contract negotiations and paying their workers a living wage. Honeywell decided it was better to lock them out and hire inexperienced workers so that they could pocket more money for their investors. Well, we weren’t going to let them get away with that kind of behavior, so on Wednesday, at the Federal building, we shut down traffic and marched to the capital to demand a fair contract for these workers.
