We hope you’re as excited for the arrival of spring as we are, and the fact that you don’t even need to put on a jacket has made you even more eager to step out into the world and help make it a better place. We’ve outlined this week’s events below (Please note tonight’s time change!), and we hope to see you soon!
Where to Begin?
Do you have questions about our organization? Are you looking for a way to get involved that suits your schedule and strengths? Come learn about our chapter and all of the ways you can become a part of it at Action Night, which takes place every Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
All meetings, unless otherwise noted, are held in our Kingston office at 7 Grand Street, and Action Night dinner is provided by our Food Team.
Reach Out!
Join us for phonebanking on Monday and Tuesday nights at 5:30 p.m. We will provide a contact list and a script; all you need to bring is your phone! (A charger might be a good idea, too.)
If you prefer to greet people face-to-face, we also knock on our neighbors’ doors twice a week, Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m. and Saturdays at 10:00 a.m.
Meet Up!
Criminal Justice Committee – Tonight (Monday) at 6:45 p.m.
This group battles injustice within the “justice” system, doing research and policy work pertaining to issues that include police brutality, mass incarceration,
the school-to-prison pipeline, and promoting racial justice in the interest of dismantling these patterns.
Note: We have pushed this meeting back from its usual time (6 p.m.) to accommodate those who wish to attend the Hudson Valley May Day Rally at 4:30 p.m. in Poughkeepsie. Per the organizers:
“Community Voices Heard invites you all to come join the Poughkeepsie family as we march in the streets on May Day to uplift the working class struggle as it relates to saving the Poughkeepsie city public transportation, undocumented immigrants, public school students, and fighting any form of violence as a result of the pursuit of profit!”
We encourage you to show up in support of our neighbors in Dutchess County!
Friday at 12p.m: Faso FridayKeeping tabs on our congressman, every Friday at noon. Bring your loudest voice and something that represents your cause to 721 Broadway in Kingston. (We love big, bright signs, but we’ve also seen some brilliant handmade props recently.) All messages welcome. Faso’s habit of voting directly against the interests of his constituents shows that have a lot to cover with this guy.
Friday Evening: Environmental Justice Committee, 5:30 p.m.
Learn about the environmental hazards threatening the Hudson Valley, and discuss what we can do to protect this gorgeous region all who inhabit it.
Next Week
Committee Meeting: Healthcare/Federal Fight Back!
This committee meets on alternating Mondays (Opposite the Criminal Justice Committee) at 6 p.m. Healthcare is a human right, and we will not allow the current administration to take it away, especially from those most in need. This committee’s actions include policy research, collecting personal stories, and attending the occasional lobby session. Come support a cause that is critical for anyone who resides in a human body.
Committee Meeting: Education
(This committee meets on alternating Wednesdays at 6 p.m.)
The pursuit of justice relies on knowledge.
One of Citizen Action’s ongoing missions has been to secure a quality education and a supportive learning environment for every child in New York State. This committee works with our local districts, along with state representatives to promote fair funding and just policies in all public schools.
(Check out the materials provided by our friends at the Alliance for Quality Education – aqeny.org – to learn more about why this committee’s work is so important.)
Donations Needed!
Nothing we do is possible without the support of our donors. Please consider becoming a monthly sustaining member (<– top link on this page) or make an annual donation to provide transportation to lobby visits, training materials, food for community events, and the basics that keep our office running. Every dollar makes a difference!
If you have time (Even an hour or two!) to give, please contact Callie ([email protected]) or Shelley ([email protected]) to find out how you can help. Sometimes leading the resistance looks a lot like running errands.
We have a particular need for bilingual (Spanish/English) volunteers to interpret during meetings, and to translate a few documents. If you are able to donate this skill, please email Shelley.
Stay Ahead!
Subscribe to our Google Calendar. It’s the first place we post newly scheduled events, and it’s a great way to keep track of our meeting schedule.
