Dear Activists,

I don’t know what your week has been like, but it’s been a busy one for us. We held our annual awards gala, organized actions around the tax bill, had the police called on us by Rep. Stefanik, and signed on to two new campaigns: Start SMART, in support of marijuana legalization, and Housing Justice for All. Did I mention Elise Stefanik called the police on us? More on that later.

AROUND THE STATE

Citizen Action held their annual Progressive Leadership Awards Gala in New York City. This year we honored political strategist and commentator Angela Rye, criminal justice reform advocate Mujahid Farid, youth leaders for Make the Road New York, and the New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA).

Citizen Action joined community allies at the Capital Building in Albany to protest the GOP tax plan and anticipated cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, and other programs. If fully implemented, the Senate bill will raise taxes on the bottom 60% of New Yorkers.

Area residents stopped by Rep. Elise Stefanik’s office in Glens Falls to deliver postcards calling for renewed hospital funding and the reauthorization of the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). They received quite a surprise when a staffer called the police on them.

Metro Justice in Rochester organized a rally outside of The Cheesecake Factory in support of fair scheduling for hourly workers. The rule would require employers to provide workers with at least 14 days notice of their work schedule. They would also receive partial pay for unexpected changes to their schedule.
